Bye Bye Schnuck's

Our local Schnuck's grocery stores were recently bought out by Kroger, and Schnuck's closed their doors for good this past Saturday.  Even though I didn't do the majority of my grocery shopping there, I find this disgruntling for those who were avid Schnuck's shoppers or for those of us who liked to have more than one option.  I realize I could go to Wal-Mart (which I have a strong dislike for) for my groceries, but why should there be only one grocery store chain in town?  It seems like a monopoly if you ask me.  I sometimes like to shop at Fresh Market or Whole Foods, but if  I were to do that every week, we would be broke.  So I, along with everyone else, went to Schnuck's the day before they closed to see what I could buy for a major markdown.  The markdown's were only about 30%, but I did come away with a good feeling that I got some good deals. Where do you like to buy your groceries and why?

This was the loot I purchased and paid about $36.....the best deal was getting the beer for 20% off.

  1. Oh no! What will they do in Germantown, with the former Schuck's a couple of blocks away from Kroger?

My shopping choices in Springfield are Walmart (more choices), Price Cutter (actually a fairly high end store), Dillon's (which is Kroger), Food-4-Less (looks like a low end warehouse store but often has items that the others don't carry), Target (good frozen items and Archer Farms products, but lacking in many basic groceries), Aldi (great for 25¢ cornbread mix), and Harter House (a local chain known for their good butchers). There's also Mama Jean's (a fantastic whole foods/organic store). So where do I shop? Mostly Walmart because it's close to the house (and Walmart is more tasteful up here). It also depends on what I want - I'll go where necessary to get it.
